A woven panel and a nonwoven mat do not only filter differently, they fill differently, and that is the part worth understanding before choosing between them. A weave catches at its face: material collects on one plane, and the openings still open are the ones the dust has not yet found. A mat has thickness, and material is caught at successive depths inside it. The P14 is that second construction, a dry special nonwoven rated at 14 microns and 1,800 l/m²/sec, and both of those figures follow from the way it is built. PM210P14 is the version cut for this airbox.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven, rated at 14 microns, the finest medium listed for this airbox
- A rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, roughly a third of the woven panel for the same box
- Fibres laid without a pattern, so capture happens through the material rather than on it
- Direct fit in the series airbox: nothing trimmed, no adapter, no remapping
- About double the filtering area of a conventional performance element
- Never oiled, cleaned with compressed air, two years of warranty from purchase
Filling through instead of filling over
When a surface loads, whatever is left open has to carry all the flow, so the resistance a face-filtering element offers climbs faster the further along it gets. A mat spreads the same arriving load through its depth, which is also the reason it is quoted at a lower flow to begin with: the air has to travel the same distance the dust does, and it pays for the journey. A medium cannot be given depth for the sake of retention and then be expected to flow as though it were a single plane.
The name and the number
Rally on this machine is an equipment package. It says nothing about where the bike gets ridden, and an air filter can only answer to that, never to a badge. So take the model name out of the decision and put the conditions in. If the air genuinely carries dust, this is the medium drawn for it; if it does not, the woven panel in the same box gives the flow back. Either way the honest limit stands — a slot-in element does not make a standard 1200 noticeably stronger. It changes what reaches the inlet tract and how a consumable is looked after, and that is the whole offer.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air, from the clean side outwards, is the routine service. On a depth medium the direction is not a nicety: blowing the wrong way drives what the mat caught further into it. Where dust has combined with oil mist into a film, hand-warm water with a small amount of mild detergent releases it, and the rinsing continues until the water leaves clean. After that, only room air and patience, since heat guns, radiators and flames all shorten the life of the material. The PM210P14 is refitted dry and untreated, and the maintenance sheet is filed under Downloads.
