A sport tourer is very good at telling the rider nothing. Cruise control holds the speed you asked for, the ride-by-wire throttle sorts out how much opening that takes, and the closed-loop fuelling trims itself around whatever the intake is really flowing. Two up with luggage on a long climb the engine can be working hard for an hour at a time, and none of that reaches you as a symptom. This is the environment an air filter ages in on the Tracer 9 and the Tracer 9 GT. The Sprint Filter P08 SM272S is worth having here not because it can be felt, but because it can be inspected.
Key Features
- Roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters
- Dry woven P08 polyester, oil-free from new, so nothing can be carried downstream onto the sensors
- Polyester threads of 22 microns in diameter and upwards, woven as a single dry layer
- 80 microns of filtration alongside an airflow rating of 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- The original comes out and this goes in: the standard airbox needs no modification and the ECU no remap
- Compressed air keeps it serviceable; washable and reusable, with two years of warranty dated from purchase
A restriction that produces no symptom
Filters do not fail, they close. On a machine with this much electronic management, the closing is absorbed rather than reported. Fuelling is corrected, the requested torque is delivered a little further round the throttle, and the cruise control simply holds the set speed. There is no warning for intake restriction and nothing on the dash that reads it out. That leaves one honest method: take the element out and look at it. On a paper cartridge that inspection has no outcome unless a spare is already on the shelf, because the thing you have just removed is either refitted dirty or thrown away. The SM272S is cleaned and refitted, so the check has a result every time.
What the medium is, and what it is not
P08 is a single dry layer of woven polyester rated at 80 microns, flowing 5,050 litres per square metre per second. That is the road and track specification, and it is a trade rather than a rank: a finer weave holds back more and flows less. If a route runs regularly through dust or gravel, the P14 exists for exactly that at 14 microns and 1,800 litres, and it gives up flow to get there. For sealed roads, motorway distance and mixed weather touring, the P08 is the setting that fits.
Care and cleaning
Air does the work first, blown from the clean side outwards, which handles most cases. What it leaves behind comes off with lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. It then needs open air and time — dried right through, never with heat and never with a flame — and refitted only when dry. No oiling stage exists. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
