The R9 has only existed since 2025, which means nobody has worn one out yet. There is no second-hand experience to lean on, no owner who has opened the airbox at 40,000 kilometres and reported what he found, and no settled view on how quickly the standard element loads on this bike. The first owners are the ones writing that record. The Sprint Filter P08 SM272S is a dry woven polyester element for the standard airbox, and at this point in the model's life its real value is procedural: it can be taken out, held up to the light, cleaned and put straight back, which is how a maintenance record gets written in the first place.
Key Features
- Filtration at 80 microns, airflow rated at 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- A single dry woven layer of polyester threads of 22 microns in diameter and upwards
- Neither oil nor dressing is ever applied to the P08 medium
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance filters
- The standard airbox takes it unmodified: no remap, and no change to homologation
- Washable, reusable and intended to last the service life of the motorcycle; two years of warranty from purchase
The specification set in the first years
Whatever is decided about the intake in the first two or three years is what this motorcycle carries through its warranty period and into its first resale. Paper elements leave nothing behind: each one is discarded, and the next owner inherits an intake tract he simply has to take on trust. A washable element is a stated specification instead. It stays with the machine, it can be shown to a buyer, and the invoice sits in the service folder as something that was fitted once rather than something that was consumed and replaced.
Track days count in hours, not kilometres
A supersport on this platform will see circuit use, and a day on track is a few hours at sustained high load, not a distance. The service schedule counts kilometres. Until enough field experience exists for this model to say when the standard element is genuinely finished, the only reliable answer is to look at it, and looking is only free when the element can go back in. Between two sessions that is an air line and a few minutes. What it will not do is add measurable power to a standard R9. The gain is a low intake restriction that stays where it started, service after service, rather than drifting upward between replacements.
Care and cleaning
Start with the air line: blow the SM272S through from the clean side outwards, and in most services that is the end of it. If it is dirtier, lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Drying happens in open air, taken to completion — heat and flames have no place in it — and the element is refitted dry. Nothing is oiled at any stage. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha R9, 2025 to 2026. The same SM272S element serves four listings built around this airbox, alongside the MT-09 / SP, the Tracer 9 / GT and the XSR 900 GP/ GT; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
