DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-07 is a shock absorber spring rated at 46 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • 129 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 46 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 00698-07
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 230 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 46 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 46 N/mm

Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Fitting

Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
