DescriptionThe whole story▼
For more than twenty years the Suzuki DR-Z400S has been the dual-sport that owners strip down and point at the dirt. It leaves the dealer dressed for the road, with mirrors and indicators, and many riders start changing it within weeks: tyres with more bite, protection under the engine, and levers that can cope with the ground. One of those changes can be Accossato's B8142, a front brake lever with a folding blade for the DR-Z400S of 2000 to 2019 and 2021. It is CNC-machined in Italy from Ergal 7075.
Key Features
- Folding front brake lever for the Suzuki DR-Z400S, 2000 to 2019 and 2021
- Fits the original front brake master cylinder in place of the standard lever
- Anti-break joint allows the blade to fold forward in a fall
- Shorter brake blade, laid out for three fingers
- Machined from solid Ergal 7075 on CNC equipment in Italy
- Blade in black or gold, base in a dark finish
- Supplied as one lever
- No German ABE documented; not approved for public roads
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato, today based in Villastellone near Turin, produces the B8142 by machining it from a solid piece of Ergal 7075. The company picks that high-strength alloy for three qualities, strength, lightness and dependability, and CNC milling gives a precise, clean part instead of a casting. The lever is divided into two sections: a dark base that stays put on the master cylinder's pivot, and a black or gold blade attached to it through the folding joint. Compared with Accossato's clutch lever, the brake blade is shorter and intended for three fingers.
Preparing a DR-Z400S for the Dirt
The usual list for turning a DR-Z400S into a trail machine has barely changed in two decades, largely because the bike itself changed so little. Tyres come first, then protection for the underside of the engine, then everything that sticks out and can snap. Mirrors are unbolted before an off-road day, and the levers get a hard look. A dual-sport carries more weight than a pure competition enduro, and when it topples over on stony ground, much of that weight can end up resting on the tip of whichever lever is underneath.
A folding blade is the item on that list that does its work at the moment of the fall. When the DR-Z400S settles onto its right side, the joint in the B8142 can let the blade swing forward rather than absorb the whole impact, and the odds are decent that the lever still works once you have hauled the bike upright. That is not guaranteed; a hard enough knock will still bend or break it. But a long way from the van, a working front brake decides whether the rest of the loop is ridden normally or crawled back on the rear brake alone.
Fitment and Compatibility
Two runs of the Suzuki DR-Z400S appear in Accossato's list for the B8142: 2000 to 2019, and the 2021 model year on its own. The 2020 bike is not included. The lever replaces the stock part at the original front brake master cylinder. Its counterpart on the left is the C7140 folding clutch lever, which covers exactly the same years; since each is offered in black and in gold, the two sides can be ordered to match.
Road Approval
No German ABE is documented for the B8142. The DR-Z400S is sold as a road-registered dual-sport, but with this lever fitted it is not approved for use on public roads in Germany; the lever is intended for off-road riding and closed-course events.
