Sprint Filter SM302S air filter

The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

When Honda gave the Monkey 125 its new engine and fifth gear for 2022, the air filter number stayed exactly the same. The box around it did not. The redesigned upper cover leaves less room above the element, and Sprint Filter's earlier Monkey part, built with a deeper pack for extra surface, no longer lets it close. The SM302S is the answer: a P08 element made to the precise dimensions of Honda's own filter, for the five-speed bike and nothing else.

Key Features

  • P08 woven polyester, used dry: 80 µm at 5,050 l/m²/sec
  • Cut to the same outline and depth as Honda element 17210-K0F-T00
  • The 2022-on airbox cover (17235-K0F-T60) closes over it as it does over the original
  • 93.13 % of 100-micron particles stopped, against 76.42 % for four-layer oiled cotton
  • No oil at any stage — cleaned with compressed air and refitted
  • Two years' warranty from the date of purchase

Why a second Monkey filter exists

It would be simpler for everyone if one element fitted every Monkey 125, and for four years one did. The PM179 family was deliberately made taller than the Honda part, because more pleat depth means more working surface. On the JB02 that extra height had somewhere to go. On the JB03 and JB05 it does not, so Sprint Filter went back to the original dimensions rather than ask owners to force a lid shut. What you lose is the enlarged pack. What you keep is the medium, the dry construction and the fact that the element is bought once.

What the P08 is for

Tarmac, mostly, with the odd gravel car park. The P08 weave is the everyday Sprint Filter specification: open enough that a small single never struggles for air, fine enough that it out-filters oiled cotton by a clear margin in the manufacturer's test. It will not turn a standard Monkey into a faster one, and no drop-in element on a standard airbox would. It gives the engine a filter that behaves the same in its fifth year as in its first, which a paper element cannot promise.

Care and cleaning

Take the element out, hold it up to the light, and blow compressed air through it from the engine side towards the dirty side. That is the whole routine most of the time. Stubborn grime comes off in lukewarm water with a drop of mild detergent; rinse until clear and let it dry naturally. No heat, no flame, no oil, and never refit it damp. Fitment & Compatibility

Honda Monkey 125 from model year 2022 onwards: frame code JB03 or JB05, five-speed gearbox, upper airbox cover 17235-K0F-T60. It is not the part for the 2018–2021 JB02 with four gears; that bike takes PM179S. Honda's filter number 17210-K0F-T00 is identical on both generations, so it cannot be used to choose between them. Check the number of gears, the frame code or the part number on the airbox cover instead.
