DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00580-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 95 N/mm, 250 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 116 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00580-31
  • Free length 250 mm
  • Measured spring rate 95 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

The Numbers That Matter

The 57 mm bore and 250 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 95 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Fitting

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
