DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60011-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 95 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 230 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 95 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 60011-31

Why the Rate Holds

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Dimensions

The 57 mm bore and 230 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 95 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 95 N/mm

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

What Fitting Involves

Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
