DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00696-19 is a shock absorber spring rated at 70 N/mm, 290 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 00696-19
  • Free length 290 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 70 N/mm
  • 145 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 290 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 70 N/mm.

Choosing 70 N/mm

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Installation

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
