Manufacture and Tolerance
Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.
Size and Rate
Dimensionally this is a 70 mm × 270 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 45 N/mm.
Choosing the Rate
If reaching the sag figure takes almost all of the available preload, the rate is too soft; if sag is reached with none at all, it is too firm. A spring that is too firm keeps the rear high, which quickens the steering but costs rear grip over broken surfaces. Rider weight in full kit, a pillion and luggage all belong in the calculation — the weight of the machine alone does not decide the rate.
Rate and the Linkage
Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the rear and slackens the steering. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.
What Fitting Involves
Torque the shock mounting bolts to the manufacturer's figure when the shock goes back in; the new spring changes nothing about those values. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Check the free length against the old spring before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
