DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06510-24 is a shock absorber spring rated at 24 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 24 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06510-24
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 175 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 300 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 300 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 24 N/mm

On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

What Fitting Involves

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
