What It Is
Öhlins publishes 42.2 mm, 21 mm for 06229-02 — the dimensions are the identity of the part. Öhlins recommends replacing seals whenever the unit is opened, not only when it leaks. An oil seal that has hardened lets the shaft pass oil past it, and the damping fades long before the leak becomes visible. Nitrile, Viton and PTFE behave differently with temperature, and Öhlins picks per position.
Why the Original
Öhlins publishes dimensions for its service parts so a workshop can verify before it fits. Parts remain available years after a unit leaves the current price list, which is unusual in this trade. Where a number has been superseded, Öhlins states the replacement — we pass that on. For a full rebuild, the seal kit plus the wear parts is usually the sensible order.
Getting the Number Right
06229-02 is the Öhlins number for this position — the same one printed in the service documentation. The published dimensions are inner diameter 42.2 mm, outer diameter 21 mm — measure the old part against them if you are unsure. Öhlins uses seals with a spring-loaded lip so they follow the shaft as it wears. Öhlins specifies seal compounds for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting service parts means opening a pressurised unit. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do that here, with the right tools and a dyno check afterwards — just ask.
