DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08434-70 is a pair of fork springs rated at 7.0 N/mm, 445 mm long with a 41 mm inner diameter. Getting the rate right restores the static sag the chassis was designed around.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 41 mm
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Free length 445 mm
  • Tapered-wound, constant rate
  • 252 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 08434-70
  • Measured spring rate 7.0 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

Size and Rate

At 445 mm free length and 41 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Installation

Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
