DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 68004-70 is a pair of fork springs rated at 7.0 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 35.3 mm inner diameter. Spring rate is the single largest variable in how a front end behaves, and it is the one thing no damping adjuster can compensate for.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 68004-70
  • Inner diameter 35.3 mm
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Free length 300 mm
  • 146 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 7.0 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 300 mm and the inner diameter at 35.3 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
