ls2-ff902-scope-ii-oxyd-grey-blue-purple-helmet
LS2 FF902 Scope II Oxyd Grey Blue Purple – Modular Touring Helmet ECE 22.06 P/J

The most unusual helmet in the Scope II range, and the only one here that is not built out of greys. The Oxyd gradient carries pink through to purple across a matt shell, and because the transitions are soft rather than blocked, the two shift into each other differently depending on where you stand — which is the whole point of a graphic made of gradients.

Three shells for seven sizes

The Scope II runs XS to 3XL on three shells (XS–S / M–L / XL–3XL). Read that against the price and it is the clearest signal of where LS2 spent the money on this helmet: not on an exotic shell material, not on a carbon weave you can photograph, but on tooling nobody sees. It is an unglamorous place to invest and it is the one that changes how the helmet fits, weighs and looks on every head that is not a medium.

About the Oxyd matt finish

Matt over a gradient is the hardest combination in the range to produce and the most interesting to own. A gloss coat would have added depth and taken away the chalky, powder-like quality that makes these colours read as pigment rather than paint; matt keeps them flat, so the pink and the purple sit at the same visual distance and the transition between them stays soft instead of being cut by a highlight. It is also the finish that changes least across the day, because there is nothing reflective to catch a low sun and blow out the lighter half. Practically, matt does what matt always does: it hides the fine scratches a modular collects around the chin bar, and it asks you to soak insects off rather than wipe them. Colours in this family are also, unavoidably, the ones a second owner is choosiest about — worth knowing if resale matters to you.

HPTT: what the shell actually is

HPTT, injection-moulded, three separate shell sizes. The material choice is the whole economic argument of this helmet, so it is worth stating in one line: LS2 spent on tooling what most manufacturers at this price spend on shell material. Whether that is the right trade depends on you. If weight is your first priority it is not. If fit, proportion and price are, it is the better bargain by some distance.

Ninety degrees, not one hundred and eighty

Ninety degrees rather than a hundred and eighty is a cost decision, not an oversight, and it is one of the clearest reasons this helmet is a hundred and twenty euros cheaper than the Advant. A bar that rotates all the way to the rear needs a longer travel path, a second set of detents and a shell profile shaped to receive it. If you spend a lot of time riding through towns with the helmet open, that is worth the difference. If you open it at stops, this is not.

What ECE 22.06 and the P/J label actually mean

ECE 22.06 tests the helmet you actually buy. Accessories are fitted for the test rather than removed, the visor goes through it, and the shell is struck at up to eighteen points at more than one speed. Then it is dropped onto an angled, abrasive-faced anvil so rotational acceleration can be measured — the change that made 22.06 a genuinely different standard rather than a revision.

The P/J suffix is the part that concerns modular riders specifically. It means this helmet was certified twice: once closed as a full-face, once open as a jet. Riding with the chin bar raised is therefore approved. On a flip-up carrying P alone, it is not.

Where it sits — and what SHARP actually tested

A hundred and seventy-nine euros puts this at the bottom of our flip-up table and four hundred grams above the full-face that shares its shell material. Both of those facts are the same fact seen twice: a chin bar that opens costs weight, and a polymer shell costs weight, and this helmet has both.

The SHARP question, answered plainly. There is a three-star entry for the FF902 Scope from May 2022 — ECE 22.05, 1.65 kg, six sizes. That is the generation before this one. The Scope II carries 22.06, weighs 1750 g and uses three shells across seven sizes. Untested is not the same as unrated, and we would rather say untested than borrow.

Model

Type

Shell

Weight

RRP

FF820 Rapid III

Full-face

HPTT

1350 g

from 99 €

FF902 Scope II

Flip-up (P/J)

HPTT

1750 g

from 179 €

FF906 Advant

Flip-up (P/J)

KPA

1750 g

from 299 €

FF901 Advant X

Flip-up (P/J)

HPFC

1600 g

from 399 €

FF901 Advant X Carbon

Flip-up (P/J)

Carbon 6K

1550 g

from 469 €

COOLMAX, and where the air goes

Everything in this helmet that touches your head comes out and goes in a washing machine, which is worth more than it sounds. A liner absorbs sweat and hair oils, and those break the foam down chemically as well as making the helmet smell — a liner washed twice a season lasts markedly longer than one that never is. The fabric is COOLMAX, which moves moisture out by capillary action rather than simply absorbing it.

Air gets in at the chin and the front, travels through channels moulded into the multi-density EPS, and leaves through the rear exhaust port.

The visor, the sun visor and the Pinlock in the box

A Pinlock lens has a service life of its own, independent of the visor, and this catches people out. The silicone bead that seals it hardens over a couple of seasons, and once it does, breath starts to creep in at the edges. If a visor that used to stay clear now mists around its perimeter, replace the lens rather than the screen — the DKS260 insert is stocked separately.

Getting the helmet off a fallen rider

Multi-density EPS, a reinforced strap, a micrometric ratchet and an emergency release: none of these appear in photographs and all of them are what you are actually paying for.
