DescriptionThe whole story▼
An 85cc two-stroke rewards the rider who keeps it spinning. Let the revs fall in a slow turn on a Kawasaki KX85 and the engine drops out of its power, so young racers learn early to use the clutch almost as much as the throttle: slipping it out of corners, feathering it up steep faces, catching the engine before it bogs. Accossato's C7220 gives that busy left hand a folding lever. It fits the KX85 from 2001 to 2022, is milled from a solid Ergal 7075 billet, and its blade is long enough for four fingers.
Key Features
- Folding clutch lever for the Kawasaki KX85, 2001 to 2022
- Takes the place of the stock lever at the original clutch perch
- Long blade with room for four fingers, as Accossato designs it
- Anti-break joint lets the blade fold forward instead of snapping
- Milled from a solid block of Ergal 7075 in Italy
- Blade in black, gold or green on a dark base
- One lever in the pack
- No German ABE documented; for motocross and off-road use
Construction and Material Quality
The C7220 is made the slow way. Rather than casting a blank and tidying it up, Accossato mills every one out of a solid piece of Ergal 7075 and relies on the strength of that aluminium alloy to keep the lever sturdy, light and reliable through a long run of race weekends. The machining happens in Italy. Two components leave the machine: a base with a dark finish that pivots on the original perch, and a coloured blade, black, gold or green, carried on the hinge that lets it fold. As a clutch lever it is cut long, so the pull can be shared by all four fingers.
Keeping an 85 on the Pipe
Small two-strokes make most of their drive in a fairly narrow band of revs. A KX85 ridden too gently falls out of that band in every tight corner and then stutters when the throttle opens on the exit. The cure is clutch work: pull the lever in slightly as the bike slows, hold the revs up, then let it out smoothly as the rear tyre starts to push. Done well, the engine sounds like one unbroken wail around the lap. Done badly, it produces stalls, lurches and the occasional loop-out. Coaches spend hours on this with young riders, because it is often what separates the fast ones on an 85 from the merely brave.
All that clutch use affects the lever in two ways. One is comfort: a young hand working the clutch lap after lap tires quickly, and a long blade lets the whole hand join in instead of the tips of two fingers. The other is exposure. A rider still learning the technique will now and then release the clutch too abruptly and end up on the ground, and if the KX85 goes down on the clutch side, the lever reaches the dirt first. The joint on the C7220 gives the blade the option of folding forward at that moment, which leaves a reasonable chance of finishing the moto with a clutch that works. There is no guarantee, but on a bike that needs the clutch in every corner, the difference is large.
Fitment and Compatibility
The C7220 appears in Accossato's list for the Kawasaki KX85 of 2001 to 2022 and mounts at the original clutch perch on the left of the handlebar. Its partner for the front brake, the folding B8262, covers the same span of model years. Both are made in black, gold and green; the brake lever is also offered in blue, which is not available for the C7220.
Road Approval
There is no German ABE on record for the C7220. It is sold for motocross and off-road riding, the same ground the KX85 was designed for.
