DescriptionThe whole story▼

When the first R1 appeared in 1998, it changed what riders expected from a litre sports bike, and the early models have since become sought-after machines in their own right. Owners who restore one usually replace worn controls, and the clutch lever, handled on every ride for decades, is often among the first. The Accossato ESY688 is a CNC-machined aluminium clutch lever listed for the R1 from 1998 to 2014 and again for 2022 to 2024, with an adjustable distance to the grip.

Key Features

  • Clutch lever for the R1, listed for 1998 to 2014 and 2022 to 2024
  • Replaces the original lever at the clutch mounting
  • Adjustable reach
  • Silver or black blade for a period look, five brighter colours as well
  • Standard length approximately 138 mm; short and long in selected colours
  • CNC-machined aluminium, anodised, black hub
  • Fixed one-piece blade

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato has been in business since 1969, when it was founded in Moncalieri near Turin as a builder of competition motorcycles. The ESY688 is machined from aluminium on CNC equipment and anodised, the hub black and the blade in the colour you choose. That anodised layer is part of the aluminium itself, so it is far less prone to the flaking and pitting that paint and plating can show on older bikes. There is no folding joint: the blade is a fixed piece from pivot to end.

Restoring an Early R1

Restoring a modern classic raises questions that restorers of older machines rarely face. An R1 from around the turn of the millennium was built with parts that can be hard to find new today, and a careful restoration sometimes has to accept a well-made replacement where the original is no longer available. The ESY688 is a sensible example. In silver or black it stays close to the look of the period, and its machined finish matches the standard the rest of a carefully restored bike deserves. Owners who treat their R1 as a bike to ride rather than a showpiece may prefer a colour: blue has a long association with Yamaha's racing machines, and red suits the red-and-white schemes that some early R1s wore. Whatever the choice, an older bike is a good occasion to set up the controls properly. Check the clutch free play after fitting, adjust the reach so that the bite point falls where your fingers rest, and consider the long blade if the pull feels heavy. The condition of the clutch mechanism itself affects the pull as well, so look at it at the same time.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the ESY688 for the R1 from 1998 to 2014, through all the versions of those years, and again for the 2022 to 2024 bikes. Between them lies a gap: R1 models of 2015 to 2021 are listed with the ESV04A instead. On the brake side, the EDR019 is listed from 2009 and the EDR015 for 2015 to 2024; for an R1 built before 2009, Accossato's list shows no brake lever.

Road Approval

Accossato documents no German ABE for the ESY688; our offer is therefore for track use.
