DescriptionThe whole story▼

On a fast motorway, the vehicle to worry about is often the one behind you. When traffic ahead suddenly bunches up, many experienced FJR1300AS riders give the driver behind an early warning: a light touch on the brake lever that switches on the brake light before the bike has slowed much. The Accossato EDF016 is an aluminium brake lever for the FJR1300AS of 2012 to 2018. It mounts on the original master cylinder, and its reach can be set so that such a light touch is easy to give.

Key Features

  • Brake lever for the FJR1300AS, 2012 to 2018
  • Uses the original master cylinder
  • Reach to the grip adjustable at the hub
  • Standard blade about 138 mm, short and long in selected colours
  • Aluminium, machined and anodised
  • Black hub, blade in one of seven colours
  • Rigid construction
  • No German ABE documented; sold for track use

Construction and Material Quality

CNC machines mill the EDF016 out of aluminium before it is anodised. Its black hub holds the pivot and the adjuster, while the blade, in your colour, has no fold or hinge anywhere along it. Machining leaves an even, accurately shaped blade, and a rigid lever has a useful property for the technique described below: the first movement at your fingertips arrives at the master cylinder undiluted, so the brake light switch reacts to exactly the touch you give it.

Warning the Traffic Behind

Motorway queues build suddenly, and a driver who is following too closely may not notice a motorcycle slowing until it is late. A common defensive habit is to warn them first: before braking properly, brush the lever just enough to light the brake lamp, then brake progressively once you have checked your mirrors. Some riders flash the light a few times. This only works if the lever gives you the light without grabbing the brake at once, so the reach and the first part of the travel matter. After fitting, check that the brake light comes on early in the lever's movement, before the pads bite, as it did with the original part. Then set the reach so that your fingers can rest on the blade without pressing it. On the FJR1300AS, that gives you a quick, deliberate way to speak to the traffic behind, not only to slow down.

Fitment and Compatibility

This lever is listed by Accossato for the FJR1300AS from 2012 to 2018, in the versions of 2012 and 2013, 2014 and 2015, and 2016 to 2018. It replaces the original brake lever on the stock master cylinder, and nothing else in the braking system changes. The same EDF016 is also listed for the FJR1300 and the FJR1300A. Black and red are standard-length levers only.

Road Approval

There is no German ABE documented for this lever, so we sell it for use on circuits.
