Most maintenance decisions let you look first. Lift the panel out after a season, hold it up to a window, and the air the motorcycle has been drinking is written across it in grey. The Valico DSX listed from 2023 to 2026 includes machines still being delivered, and their owners have nothing to hold up to a window yet. A filtering medium is chosen here before the evidence for it exists — which means choosing from the roads you intend to ride rather than from the part you already have.
Key Features
- Dry polyester special non-woven, rated at 7 microns, the finest of the Sprint Filter media
- Rated flow 560 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard road-and-track element
- Depth of laid fibre instead of a woven cloth, dry throughout its life and never oiled
- Close to twice the filtering surface of other performance elements, in the standard airbox
- Drops in where the factory paper panel came out: no modification, no adapter, no remap
- Regenerated with compressed air for the life of the motorcycle, with two years of guarantee
An inventory of roads, taken honestly
The useful exercise takes five minutes and belongs before the order, not after it. How much of an ordinary year is unsealed — the track to a trailhead, the gravel road that shortens a commute, the weeks behind farm traffic in late summer. Not what the machine is capable of, but where it will genuinely be on ordinary weekends. If that inventory comes back mostly dust, the CM251T12 answers the question actually being asked. If it comes back mostly tarmac, the standard CM251S is the proportionate part, and taking it is not a downgrade.
The bill arrives long before the benefit
That is the awkward shape of this purchase. The flow is surrendered on the first ride out: 560 l/m²/sec against 5,050, roughly a ninth, the largest step in the range and the price of reaching 7 microns. What it buys is wear that never happens, on a timescale of years, and nothing on the motorcycle will ever confirm it. So resist the two claims that would make the decision easier than it is. A drop-in element adds nothing to the output of a standard Valico DSX. And a medium that is wrong for your roads is wrong in either direction, whichever end of the range it came from.
Care and cleaning
Service the CM251T12 with compressed air first, aimed at its clean side so the dust is expelled outwards; on most intervals that is the whole job. Once water and grit have been through together, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse it thoroughly, and let it dry right through in open air. Heat is the one thing that destroys these elements, so no radiators, no hot air guns and no flames — and it goes back into the airbox dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet is stored in the Downloads tab.
