Look along the intake of an RC 390 and almost nothing on it ages. The airbox has the same volume on its last day as its first. The ducting, the throttle body, the injectors: all of them do in year eight what they did in year one, give or take a clean. There is exactly one component whose condition changes continuously from the moment the engine is first started, and it is the filter. That is an unusual position for a part to be in, and it is the reason the choice between a consumable element and a resettable one is a choice about the whole intake.
Key Features
- P14 dry nonwoven, 14 µm at 1,800 l/m²/sec, where the P08 sits at 80 µm and 5,050
- Restriction is restored by cleaning rather than drifting upward until a replacement is due
- Dry medium with no oil at any stage — nothing to migrate onto the sensors downstream
- Fits the standard RC airbox in place of the paper element: no modification, no remap
- Serviced with an air line and refitted immediately, with no drying or re-treatment
- Specified for the life of the motorcycle, two-year guarantee from purchase
The component that keeps moving
A paper panel travels in one direction only. It loads, its pressure drop rises, and no amount of care brings it back — the reset is a new part, which is why it is scheduled rather than judged. A washable element turns that one-way drift into something you can undo, and the practical effect is that the intake spends most of its life near the state it was designed around instead of somewhere along the way to a service. On a bike ridden on the road for years, that consistency is worth more than any figure measured on the day it was new.
Which medium, and what it costs
The P14 is the choice for dust — dry back roads, farm country, a summer without rain. It buys that by passing less air, and 1,800 l/m²/sec against 5,050 is not a rounding difference. If the RC mostly sees clean tarmac and the upper half of the rev range, the P08 is the better match. And in neither case is an insert filter a power part: it does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably quicker, and this one moves the flow figure the other way.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air against the clean side, worked outward, and the PM200P14 goes straight back in — nothing to soak, nothing to wait for. Between longer intervals, hand-warm water with a mild detergent takes out what the air did not, followed by a thorough rinse and a slow dry in moving air. Heat is never part of it, a flame least of all, and a damp element belongs nowhere near the airbox. Check the lid seats squarely on refitting. The sheet is in Downloads.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the KTM RC 390, 2022 to 2026, replacing the original in the unmodified airbox. Eleven KTM and Husqvarna machines share this code, the track-only RC 390 R among them, so order by code and year. The list is in the Fitment tab.
