A 2024 or 2025 MT-09 is, for most owners, a motorcycle still inside its factory warranty and still on its first set of tyres. That is the context this element has to be judged in, because the Sprint Filter SM272S F1-85 is not the cautious option for the bike. It carries the P08 F1-85 competition medium: 85 microns of filtration where the standard P08 is rated at 80, bought with an airflow figure of 15,000 litres per square metre per second against 5,050. Around three times the air, and a filtration rating that has moved in the wrong direction. The number is small; the direction is not, and it deserves a deliberate choice.
Key Features
- Competition-grade dry polyester: 85 microns of filtration, 15,000 l/m²/sec of airflow
- Coarser than the 80 microns of the standard P08 — the extra flow is paid for in retention
- Not oiled at any point, so nothing can be lifted off the medium and carried onto the sensors
- Filtering area in the region of twice what other performance elements provide
- Sits in the unaltered series airbox: nothing cut, no remap, homologation as delivered
- Cleaned with an air line rather than binned, and covered by a two-year guarantee
Who carries the difference
Sprint Filter guarantees the element for two years and builds it to outlast the motorcycle. What no guarantee covers, here or anywhere, is what a filter lets past it. On an engine with a few thousand kilometres on it that consequence sits with the owner, and it arrives, if it arrives at all, as bore and ring wear years later rather than as an event. An MT-09 or MT-09 SP used on the road — commuting, weekend routes, the occasional trip — is described by the standard P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 litres, and there is nothing in that use with a claim on the 15,000-litre figure.
Nothing here is consumed
The useful consequence of both media being dry and washable is that choosing one does not throw the other away. An element that is cleaned and refitted has no expiry, so the original can be washed, dried and put on a shelf while the SM272S F1-85 goes into the airbox for a track weekend, then swapped back afterwards in the time it takes to lift the airbox lid. It also keeps the decision honest: the racing weave is in the bike for the occasion that justifies it, and out of it the rest of the year.
Care and cleaning
Nothing is oiled, so nothing has to be dosed. Compressed air, applied to the clean face and driven outwards, is the whole of a normal service. Heavier deposits come off with lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water leaves clear. Drying then takes open air and patience — no heat source, no flame, no exceptions — and the element goes back into the airbox only once it is dry all the way through. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Built for the Yamaha MT-09 and MT-09 SP, 2024 to 2026. The same element covers four listings sharing this airbox; the R9, the Tracer 9 / GT and the XSR 900 GP/ GT are the other three, and the full list is in the Fitment tab.
