Nearly every air filter in service is judged by one method: the tank comes up, the lid comes off, somebody looks at it and forms an opinion. That method suits some media better than others. A finer aperture stops most of what it catches at the surface, where it accumulates as a visible darkening; a racing weave at 85 microns lets more of the fine fraction into the cloth before it is held, so the face looks respectable for longer. On a ZZR 1400 covering long distances between services, the eye is usually the only instrument in the room, and the PM161S F1-85 is the panel that gives it the least to go on.
Key Features
- 85-micron dry polyester in Sprint Filter's racing weave; no oil, at any stage
- Airflow of 15,000 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 for the standard P08 in this same panel
- 95.22 per cent retention on 100-micron particles, compared with 93.13 per cent for the P08
- Around twice the cloth area of a normal performance element
- Straight swap for the paper panel in the series airbox — nothing altered, no map change
- Washable and reusable for the life of the bike; two years of warranty
Servicing by interval, not by appearance
The answer is not to squint harder but to stop deciding by looking. Note the date and the odometer when the panel goes in, and clean it on a schedule set for the roads you ride, not on a glance. That is a schedule a washable element can actually keep, because sticking to it costs nothing but an air line and half an hour; with a disposable panel, the same discipline means buying something every time, which is precisely why it is never kept. A clean also returns this element to a known starting condition, so the schedule has a fixed reference point.
What the airflow figure does not promise
Three times the flow rate of the standard medium describes the cloth, not the motorcycle, and a drop-in element does not make a standard ZZR 1400 noticeably stronger. The rate is a capacity per square metre measured on a bench; what an engine actually draws is set by its displacement, its timing and how far the throttles are open. So the honest reason to choose this medium is a duty cycle that repeatedly asks for everything the intake can supply, backed by race-style servicing. For a fast road machine, the standard P08 in the same shape is the better-matched half of the pairing.
Care and cleaning
Clean the panel dry wherever possible: compressed air on the clean face, the nozzle kept moving and held far enough back that the weave is not driven into itself. Where a wash is unavoidable, use lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and rinse until nothing further comes out. Dry it fully in moving air, never with heat or a flame, and refit it dry and untreated. Do this more often than the service book implies; the appearance will not prompt you. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.

Cut for the standard airbox of the Kawasaki ZZR 1400 + ABS built from 2012 to 2026, one of two entries sharing this panel alongside the ZXR-14 Ninja + ABS. Both are listed in the Fitment tab.
