DescriptionThe whole story▼

Svartpilen is Swedish for black arrow, and the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 is the more rugged of the brand's two 401 roadsters: a single-cylinder bike with a wide handlebar and coarse-tread tyres, made for the city and for the gravel lanes at its edge. On those two surfaces the front brake behaves very differently, and the rider's hand has to know the difference. The Accossato EDF039 replaces the Svartpilen's front brake lever with a CNC-machined aluminium one for the original master cylinder, adjustable in reach and listed for 2018 to 2020.

Key Features

  • Front brake lever for the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401, 2018 to 2020
  • Replaces the stock lever on the original master cylinder
  • Adjustable distance to the grip
  • Standard length approx. 138 mm in every colour
  • Short in five colours, long in four
  • Milled from solid aluminium, anodised, black hub
  • Fixed blade, no folding joint

Construction and Material Quality

The Svartpilen's design leaves plenty of mechanical parts on show, and the levers are among the most visible of them. The EDF039 is machined from solid aluminium on CNC equipment and anodised in two tones: a black hub, holding the pivot and the reach adjuster, and a blade in black, blue, red, orange, gold, silver or green. The blade is fixed. There is no hinge along its length, only a single piece of anodised metal from the hub out to the tip.

Tarmac in Town, Gravel at the Edge

In town, the Svartpilen brakes on asphalt, cobbles and painted lines, often in a hurry and often in stop-start traffic. A few kilometres further out, the same bike can be on a gravel lane between fields, where the front tyre floats on loose stones and a squeeze that was fine in town would lock the wheel. Riders who use the Svartpilen 401 for both learn to brake at two different intensities: firm and quick on tarmac, slow and progressive on gravel, with more of the stopping done in a straight line. The reach adjuster helps with both. Set the blade close enough that your fingers can hold it lightly without the hand opening, and the fine control needed on gravel becomes easier to find. If you brake with two fingers and keep the other two around the grip when the lane gets bumpy, the short blade, made in blue, gold, green, orange and silver, is the version to look at.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the EDF039 for the Svartpilen 401 from 2018 to 2020, where it sits on the original front brake master cylinder. Accossato's clutch lever for the same bikes and years is the ESK390, which can be ordered in the same colour to complete the pair.

Road Approval

This brake lever has no documented German ABE, which is why it is sold for track use.
