Three media are offered for the 450 RR airbox, and this is the finest of them — while also being the least expensive of the three. That ordering surprises people who assume filtration is sold by the micron. It is not. This mat lists at roughly four fifths of what the standard road element costs and under a third of the racing medium, because what the racing part is priced on is flow and pedigree, not how small a particle it stops. The question this one answers

Not every 450 RR is a weekend machine on clean roads. Some are the only motorcycle in the household and do the school run, the commute and the summer trip; some live where road building is a permanent condition rather than an event. Fine airborne particles are the constant in all of that, and they are what a 14-micron mat is drawn to catch. What that costs is stated in the same breath: 1,800 l/m²/sec of material flow against the standard fabric's 5,050. Finer means more held and less through, always and everywhere, and the choice belongs to whoever knows what the bike actually does on Wednesdays.

Where price and specification part company

It is worth saying what the extra outlay on the racing medium buys, since this element sits under it. That part is rated at a far higher flow, and flow only becomes useful when the rest of the intake can take advantage of it. If the machine is standard, the additional headroom has nowhere to go, while the finer mat here is working every single ride. In neither case does the filter make the motorcycle noticeably more powerful — an element inside an unmodified airbox never has. It gives a lower and steadier intake resistance, and in this case a good deal more retained dust.

Care and cleaning

Cleaning is deliberately simple, because a filter that is awkward to service ends up not being serviced. Compressed air from the clean face outward is the standard method and takes minutes. Where the mat has been loaded hard, wash the SM261P14 in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, and let it dry in open air — never with heat, never over a flame.
