Put the racing element and the standard one side by side and list what is different. Both are dry polyester. Both are cleaned with compressed air and go straight back in. Both drop into the standard airbox without a cut, a bracket or a remap. Both carry the same two-year warranty and the same intention of outlasting the motorcycle. Everything that decides what the part is like to own is identical between them. Exactly one number differs — the specification of the cloth — and on an NC750X that is the number this engine is least equipped to make use of.

The long list of things that stay the same

That list matters because it is where most of the value of any Sprint Filter element sits. Not having to buy a panel again, not having to keep one in a cupboard, not putting oil anywhere near an intake with sensors in it, not touching the fuelling — all of that is already true of the standard cloth. Whatever the case for the racing line is, it cannot be built from those things, because none of them changes when you pay more.

The one thing that does change

The cloth goes from 80 µm to 85, and its rated flow from 5,050 l/m²/sec to 15,000. A higher ceiling is worth having when an engine can hold itself somewhere near one, which is the situation on a track machine spinning hard for whole sessions. The NC750X's long-stroke twin is built for the opposite: torque low down, a modest rev ceiling and long distances covered without effort. Against the standard element for this housing the racing line asks a little over twice as much, and it does not make a standard NC750X noticeably stronger — the honest reading is that here the decision is much smaller than the price difference suggests.

Care and cleaning

Blow the PM215S F1-85 through from the clean face outward and the material returns to where it started. Where a film has built up that air will not lift, wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear.
