How to measure your helmet size correctly: To find the right helmet size, measure your head circumference with a flexible tape measure.
It is important that the tape measure runs around the widest part of the head – only then will you get a correct result.
Place the tape measure at the front, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows, and run it along the sides above the ears.
At the back, the tape must run over the largest part of the back of the head (not too low on the neck). The tape may run slightly at an angle – what matters is that it sits all the way around the largest points of the head.
Make sure the tape measure sits snugly but does not dig in. Measure 2–3 times for the most accurate result. You can then compare the measured value in centimetres (cm) with our size chart.
Tips for an accurate result
- Keep hair flat (e.g. do not measure over a voluminous hairstyle)
- Keep the tape horizontal, i.e. along the largest circumference
- Do not measure too loosely
- For values between two sizes:
→ usually choose the larger size (depending on helmet model / fit)
Important note on fit
The right helmet should fit firmly without causing uncomfortable pressure points.
A new helmet may feel a little tighter at first, as the inner lining adapts slightly over time.

Two things on this helmet solve the same problem from opposite ends of the day: an integrated sun visor for the light, and a locking visor for the speed. Neither has to be carried, remembered or fitted, and together they are why one helmet can cover a commute that starts in glare and ends in the dark.
The internal shade, and the case against a tinted screen
A shade drops from inside the shell on a slider by your left hand.
A tinted screen is optically better and darker — an internal shade sits a centimetre from your eye and has to stay light enough to survive a tunnel, so it is always a compromise. But it is only better on the days you happened to bring it. The failure mode of a tinted visor is not that it is inadequate; it is that you are still wearing it at nine in the evening because swapping meant stopping, and riding home behind a dark screen is considerably worse than riding into the sun behind a clear one.
The visor lock
The MT-V-28C screen runs on the MT-M-28X mechanism and carries a locking catch: a small mechanical latch that holds the visor shut rather than relying on the friction of the detent.
The failure it prevents is not dramatic and is genuinely unpleasant. At motorway speed a visor lifted three or four millimetres by air pressure lets a jet of cold air straight into one eye, and the instinct is to reach up and push it down — taking a hand off the bar at exactly the wrong moment. The catch removes that whole sequence.
About the Highway A7 finish
Gloss. The crown and the front of the shell are a warm off-white shading into beige; the rear quarter and the lower flank are a deep navy, and the two meet along a hard diagonal with a bright orange wedge set into the join. THUNDER 4 R HIGHWAY runs in small type along the bottom edge.
Beige is an unusual base on a sport-touring helmet and a good one under sun: a light shell reflects most of the solar load where a dark one absorbs it and passes it inward. The navy rear keeps the helmet from reading as plain cream, and the orange is small enough to work as punctuation rather than as a second colour.
Noise, and what actually causes it
We will not claim this is a quiet helmet, and here is the more useful truth: for most riders the helmet is not what decides the noise.
What decides it is the screen on the bike. A screen that sends turbulent air at the base of your helmet makes any lid loud, and a naked machine with clean airflow is frequently quieter than a badly faired one. If a new helmet did not fix your noise problem, the next thing to change is the screen height, not the helmet. And wear plugs above 100 km/h regardless — wind-induced hearing loss is cumulative, painless and permanent.
The spoiler is not decoration
MT reshaped the spoiler for the R. It hides the rear exhaust, and it does aerodynamic work: behind a fairing screen the airflow is turbulent, and a helmet with a tail sits measurably steadier in it than one without.
High-speed head-shake is usually blamed on the helmet when the bike's screen is causing it. A spoiler does not remove the cause, but it makes the helmet a less willing participant.
ECE 22.06 · no DOT
Mandatory since January 2024: 18 impact points rather than the 22.05's five, several speeds, an oblique impact against a rough anvil for rotational loading, and a Brain Injury Criterion limit. No DOT marking is published for this model, and we do not claim one.
Not the SHARP-rated Thunder
SHARP lists an older "MT Thunder" and "MT Thunder 3" at four stars. Those are different, earlier helmets; the Thunder 4 R has not been tested, and we will not let a shared model name imply otherwise. In our MT range only the Track SV holds a genuine SHARP result.
Intercom preparation
The lining carries recesses for the speakers of an MT-B01 Rider Sync system, and the shell has a mounting surface for the unit itself.
The pockets are the part worth checking for, and most product pages never mention them. Without them the speakers sit on top of the lining and are pressed against the outside of your ear by the padding — uncomfortable within twenty minutes, impossible to adjust away, and painful on a long day. No intercom is supplied; only the space for one.
The rest of what is fitted
A Pinlock DKS435 Max Vision insert comes in the box — rare at this price and the reason this helmet works in winter. Sizes run XS to 3XL, 53 to 66 cm. The screen releases without tools through MT-QVSS, a nose deflector keeps breath off the inside of it, the strap closes on a micrometric ratchet, and the whole lining lifts out for washing.
A word on the gloss finish while we are on care: it shows fingerprints and dust more readily than matt, and in exchange it can be corrected: a light swirl polishes out of a gloss clearcoat and is permanent in a matt one. Never wipe a dry shell — grit dragged across gloss is exactly how those swirls appear in the first place. A wet cloth first, every time.
Getting the size right the first time
Measure the head at its widest, roughly 1–2 cm above the eyebrows, and take that circumference to the table below. Between two sizes, take the smaller: comfort padding compresses two or three millimetres in the first hours and then stops, so a helmet that starts slightly firm on the cheeks ends up right, while one that is comfortable in the shop ends up loose by the second month.
The EPS liner behind the padding does not compress at all in normal use — it only crushes in an impact, which is its whole purpose. That is why "it will give" is wrong as advice: what gives is a couple of millimetres of fabric, not the structure.
