Of everything Sprint Filter makes, the extreme non-woven has the least air to spare. Rated at 560 l/m²/sec, it hands over roughly a ninth of what the standard cloth for this airbox passes, and it does so per square metre of material. That last phrase is where this part number earns its existence: the catalogue credits it with a hundred per cent more filtering surface than the standard-size element for the same housing. The rating did not move. The number of square metres it applies to did.
Key Features
- Dry polyester special non-woven filtering to 7 microns, the finest medium in the range
- A hundred per cent more filtering surface than the standard-size element for this airbox
- Rated 560 l/m²/sec of material — a figure per square metre, now applied to twice as many
- Supplied dry and kept dry: no oil to be drawn onto anything downstream
- Seats in the series airbox in place of the paper panel, with no cutting and no remap
- Blown clear and used again, with two years of warranty from the date of purchase
Where an extra square metre is worth most
Restriction is the price every filter charges, and the charge is set by how much material the air has to cross. A medium passing 5,050 l/m²/sec has a comfortable budget; one passing 560 has almost none, and every gram of dust it holds eats into what little there is. Doubling the area therefore lands hardest where the starting figure was smallest. On the seven-micron mat the second square metre is the difference between an element that reaches its limit inside one dry week and one that works through the trip.
What the GS actually meets
The 1200-generation GS was sold as a machine that leaves the tarmac, and the ones that do meet air which is not a clean gas but a slow suspension: a graded piste in August, the plume of the rider ahead, an engine idling in whatever the arrival stirred up. That load comes fast and all at once. Capacity — not filtration, capacity — is what runs out first under it, and capacity is the one thing this part number adds. What it does not add is power. A larger element inside an unmodified airbox leaves a standard R 1200 GS exactly as strong as BMW built it.
Care and cleaning
Twice the material takes about twice as long at the compressor, and that is the whole of the extra work. The line goes on the face that looks towards the engine and the dust leaves outward, back along its own path; from the other side it would only be driven in. A season packed harder than an air line will shift is finished at the sink with hand-warm water and a trace of mild detergent. Drying is passive and unhurried — moving air, no heat gun, no oven, no flame — and the K142T12 goes back into the housing dry and unoiled. Sprint Filter's servicing sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW R 1200 GS built between 2013 and 2018, seated in the standard airbox with nothing altered around it. Six machines share this part number: five boxers of the 1200 generation and the R 1250 GS that followed. Each is named with its own years in the Fitment tab.
