The question that is left

Whether an eighty-five-micron cloth belongs in a touring boxer at all. It is the coarsest medium in the range as well as the freest-flowing, and those two facts are one fact seen from either side. The standard weave closes to eighty microns and still passes more air than an RT has ever drawn. The case for the racing cloth here rests on circuit use, and outside that it is capacity nobody is calling on.

What a level figure does and does not settle

It settles the comparison between the two racing elements and nothing beyond it. Within that pair the larger surface is simply the better buy, since the medium, the fit, the care and the warranty are identical and only the interval moves. What it cannot settle is the comparison with the other media for this airbox, where the doubled area does carry a premium and the choice of aperture is the real decision. Reading a level figure as a general recommendation is the mistake to avoid. And in no version of the comparison is this a power question: an element inside an unmodified airbox leaves a standard R 1200 RT exactly as strong as it was.

Care and cleaning

Nothing in the routine scales with the medium; only the minutes do. The load on a woven cloth sits where you can reach it, so an air line applied to the inner face and directed outwards returns the element close to where it started. Persistent road film is a job for hand-warm water and the smallest amount of mild detergent. What has no alternative is the drying: circulating air, no warmth from any source, no flame, and no refitting until the cloth is dry through. The K142S F1-85 goes in with nothing applied to it.
