Dust does not care how far you rode; a single dry gravel track loads an element faster than a month of wet tarmac. The Sprint Filter PM174S is built for owners who would rather deal with that themselves than book it in: dry woven polyester, cleaned with compressed air at the end of a dusty weekend, washed when the air line is not enough, and refitted the same day.

Key Features

Compressed air cleans it where you stand, and a wash deals with whatever the air line leaves behind

No oil in the medium: dust cannot glue itself to a tacky film, and nothing can travel downstream

Other performance filters offer roughly half as much filtering surface

The standard P08 medium — 80 µm at 5,050 l/m²/sec, for road and track

Fits the standard airbox as a straight replacement, with no modification and no remap

A two-year warranty, running from the date of purchase

Why oil is the wrong answer on an unsealed road

An oiled cotton filter catches dust by making the fibres sticky, which works until the surface is saturated and then works against you: restriction climbs quickly, and if the element is over-oiled the excess is drawn towards the air sensor and the throttle bodies. The P08 filters by weave, so a dusty element is a dirty element rather than a contaminated one, and it is cleaned by blowing the dust back out the way it came in.

If your dust is worse than most

The P08 is the road-and-track medium: 80 µm at 5,050 l/m²/sec. Sprint Filter also build this same element in P14, a special non-woven fabric at 14 µm and 1,800 l/m²/sec, and in T12 at 7 µm and 560 l/m²/sec for extreme and off-road conditions. That is a trade, not a ranking. A finer weave holds back more and flows less, in that order and by that much; the T12 is not a better filter than the P08, it is made for a different kind of air. Ride mostly on tarmac with the occasional track and the P08 is the right choice.

Care and cleaning

After a dusty weekend the answer is an air line: clean side, blown outwards, and the element is fit for the next ride. Once a season that will not be enough, and then it is a wash — lukewarm water, a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Dry it right through in open air, never with heat and never over a flame, and put the PM174S back dry. No oil goes near it at any point.
