Why Carbon

Carbon fibre is what Spark reaches for when weight and appearance matter more than resistance to stone chips. It is the lightest of the four cases on offer and the only one whose surface is a visible weave rather than a metal finish.

On a road-going boxer that spends its life on tarmac the trade is a sensible one. The material does not corrode, it does not discolour with heat the way a coated steel case can, and next to the R 1200 R's own black bodywork the weave reads as a deliberate choice rather than a bolt-on.

Four Materials, One Silencer

Spark builds the Force for this bike in carbon fibre, titanium, dark style and stainless steel. Case shape, connecting pipe, mounting and approval are identical across all four; only the surface and the price move.

This is the carbon one at 643 euro. The dark electro-coloured stainless version is GBM0403DOM at 618.

A Kilo and a Half

4,5 kg standard, 3,0 kg fitted. The R 1200 R is not a light motorcycle and this will not make it one, but the mass comes off high and to one side — where a boxer feels it most at walking pace and in tight turns.

A Certificate That Travels

Spark supplies the homologation certificate with the silencer, issued by the Italian Ministry of Transport and recognised across Europe. On a bike that gets ridden to other countries, paperwork accepted at a roadside check anywhere is worth more than a decibel figure.

A Note on the Photography

Spark publishes studio photographs of the metal versions of this silencer but not of the carbon one. Rather than show a brushed steel case on a carbon article, we have left this listing without an image. Ask us and we will request a photograph from Spark before you order.

Why Only 2015 and 2016

BMW revised the R 1200 R and RS for 2017 and changed the silencer mounting with it. Spark lists this article for the 2015 and 2016 machines specifically, and the price list groups it the same way.

What Is Replaced

The silencer and its connecting pipe. Manifold, catalytic converter and sensors stay standard, which is the basis of the homologation and the reason the job takes an hour rather than a day.
