A filtration rating only means something if all of the air goes through the filter. That sounds obvious and it is routinely the thing that goes wrong: an element of roughly the right size, pressed into an airbox it was never shaped for, seals at some points and not at others, and the air takes the easier route. Whatever the medium is rated at then stops mattering, because a small proportion of entirely unfiltered air outweighs a large proportion of well filtered air. The Sprint Filter P08 for this machine is built to the standard element's shape and sealing face, so it seats in the original airbox the way the original part did. Everything else the specification claims rests on that one unglamorous point.
Key Features
- Built to the standard element's shape and sealing face for the original airbox
- P08 medium: 80 microns of filtration at an airflow figure of 5,050 l/m²/sec
- Dry polyester, never oiled, with nothing that can migrate onto sensors or throttle bodies
- Polyester threads from ø 22 microns, woven to a calibrated aperture
- Roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters
- Washable and reusable, with a two-year warranty from the date of purchase
Fit before filtration
It helps to think of the airbox and the element as one sealed assembly with a single way in. The frame of the filter is what closes that assembly, and it has to be stiff enough to hold its shape against the pressure the engine puts on it and yielding enough at the sealing face to take up the small irregularities of a moulded plastic housing. Seen that way, a direct-fit element is not a convenience feature but the precondition for the rest of the specification. It also means nothing about the intake is being altered: no cutting, no spacers, no remap and no change to how the machine was homologated.
Ten minutes, and one thing worth checking
Fitting is straightforward. Lift the old element out, wipe any loose dirt from the airbox floor so it cannot be drawn in afterwards, and seat the P08 with the sealing face square all the way round before the cover goes back on. Run a finger round the edge; if it sits evenly, the job is done. That is also the right moment to be honest about what has changed, because the engine will not make more power for it. What it gets is a lower intake restriction that stays put between services, and a part that is cleaned rather than reordered.
Care and cleaning
Blow PM183S through from the clean side outwards with compressed air. When it needs more than that, wash in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear and let it dry fully in open air, never with heat and never near a flame. Refit it dry; the P08 is never oiled. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
