DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06773-11 is a shock absorber spring rated at 50 N/mm, 360 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 70 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06773-11
  • 201 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 360 mm
  • Measured spring rate 50 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 70 mm × 360 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 50 N/mm.

Choosing 50 N/mm

From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

Fitting

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
