DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 02421-60 is a pair of fork springs rated at 6.0 N/mm, 468 mm long with a 43.5 mm inner diameter. A fork that is sprung wrong uses up its travel before the damping has a chance to work.

Key Features

  • Free length 468 mm
  • Inner diameter 43.5 mm
  • Measured spring rate 6.0 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 02421-60
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Tapered-wound, constant rate
  • 262 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.

Dimensions

Free length 468 mm, inner diameter 43.5 mm, rate 6.0 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
