DescriptionThe whole story▼
Akrapovic sells a road-legal Racing Line for the Ninja 650 and Z650, and prints one condition against it: the EC type approval is valid only when the catalytic converter is installed. This is that converter. Without it, a legal exhaust becomes an illegal one.
Key Features
- The converter the Racing Line S-K6R12-HEGEHT's EC approval depends on
- Honeycomb metal carrier coated with palladium, rhodium and platinum
- Sized for the flow an Akrapovic system needs, not a generic replacement
- Covers the Ninja 650 and Z650 from 2017 to 2020
- Akrapovic records an EC approval against this part
The Condition, and the Part That Satisfies It
Most track exhausts in this catalogue simply have no approval. The Kawasaki 650 Racing Line is different: it is EC and ECE type approved, and it stays that way as long as a converter is in the system.
Removing the converter to chase a few more horsepower turns the whole exhaust into a track part, and no paperwork survives that. Anyone buying the Racing Line for road use needs this number alongside it.
A Replacement, Too
The other reason to order a converter is that the original has failed. They do — thermal cycling cracks the substrate, and unburned fuel from a misfire can melt it. A motorcycle from 2017 is now old enough for that to be a live possibility rather than a theoretical one.
A failed converter shows up as a rattle from the exhaust, a loss of top-end power, or a failed emissions test. It is not something that can be diagnosed by looking at the outside.
What Is Inside
A metal honeycomb with a wash coat carrying palladium, rhodium and platinum. Gas passing over those surfaces has its carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons converted to carbon dioxide and water vapour.
The metals are the cost. That is also why buying a used converter is a poor idea: the coating cannot be inspected, and a poisoned one looks exactly like a working one.
Matched, Not Generic
Akrapovic describes its converters as performance oriented, developed to keep the sound and the flow that its systems are built around. A converter is always a restriction; the design question is how small a restriction it can be while still passing the test.
That is the difference between this and a universal replacement unit, and it is why the system's published figures assume this converter.
The Parallel Twin It Was Built For
Kawasaki's 649 cc twin in the Ninja 650 and Z650 makes around 68 PS and is one of the most common A2-friendly middleweights in Germany. It was revised for 2021, and machines from that year need a different part.
Not an Exhaust
What arrives is one converter. No silencer, no headers, no link pipe. This completes a system rather than being one.
Road Approval
Akrapovic records an EC approval against this converter. Fitted to the Racing Line, it is the condition on which that system's road legality rests.
