The Stradale is the MV that gets ridden when the forecast is imperfect, because a bike equipped for distance is a bike that has to leave on the day it said it would. Weather is therefore part of its specification, and weather is a separate problem from dust or throughput. Sprint Filter answers it with a separate cloth, which is the first thing an owner of this machine should know before spending anything on the racing one.

The wet-weather answer is a different part number

P037 is the medium built for rain: polyester again, dry again, but treated to resist water, filtering at 37 microns with a rated 4,500 l/m²/sec. It exists because a filter that has been rained through has a different job from one that has been dusted. None of that is what a racing weave is for. The F1-85 cloth is specified around induction capacity at sustained full throttle, and rain does not create that condition — it creates a wetter, dirtier intake and a rider who is not using the top of the rev range in any case.

Specify for the conditions you do not get to choose

A loaded Stradale on a long route meets whatever the map contains, and the element cannot be selected leg by leg. That argues for choosing on the worst plausible half of the journey rather than the pleasant half, which is why the honest recommendation for most owners of this machine is the standard P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 l/m²/sec, or the P037 if the riding really is wet, either of them for a fraction of what CM135S F1-85 asks. Both are dry, both are washed and refitted, both remove the air filter from the list of things to carry spares for. The racing cloth adds capacity that a touring pace never draws on.

Care and cleaning

On the road the service needs no more than an air line, which most tyre shops and fuel stops can lend: aim it at the clean side, work outward, refit. At home, a wash deals with what travel leaves behind — warm water, a mild detergent, a thorough rinse until the water leaves the cloth clear. Drying is where filters get ruined by impatience: air only, never a heater, a hot-air gun or a flame, and never a damp element back in the box. Nothing is sprayed on before it is refitted.
