Two motorcycles have been sold as the F 800 GS, and they share nothing in this part of the machine. BMW built the first from 2007 to 2018, shelved the name, then brought it back for 2023 on a bike with a different engine, a different airbox and a different filter. No badge separates them. Only the year of build does, and the PM35S belongs to the earlier one — the machine that left the factory up to 2018. Settling that is the whole task before anything gets ordered.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester, one layer thick, never oiled at any point in its working life
- 80 µm apertures and 5,050 l/m²/sec of rated flow: the P08 is the road and track member of the range
- Fibres of ø 22 microns and up — a thread measurement, not the size of the openings
- Close to double the filter area of other performance panels, carried in the standard frame
- A straight exchange for the original element, with airbox and mapping left as BMW made them
- Cleaned and refitted for the motorcycle's working life, warranted for two years from the purchase date
Why a five-year gap decides more than a name
Model names get reused; housings do not. An air filter is specified by the box it seals into, so what a parts list answers is never what a motorcycle is called but what was built around it. Between 2018 and 2023 nothing wore this badge, and the machine that picked it up came from the later F platform with an intake of its own. Search by name and both parts will be offered; they are not interchangeable in either direction. The registration document ends the argument — a build year up to 2018 means this element.
What the earlier bike gets out of it
The first F 800 GS was the off-road-biased machine of its range, spoked wheels and all, and plenty have been ridden that way. So the airbox on this one is a lid that gets opened. A dry element repays that: out it comes, an air line takes the load back off, in it goes, so inspecting it costs a few minutes and there is a known condition to return to, rather than a judgement about whether the paper will do another interval. It adds no power — a panel in the series box never does — and it asks for no change to the fuelling.
Care and cleaning
The service tool is an air line: apply it to the clean side, blow outward, until the weave runs clear. After a wet or muddy day, warm water and a mild washing-up detergent finish what the air left behind, followed by a rinse that comes away clean. Drying happens in moving air at room temperature; heat ruins polyester, so ovens, blowers and open flame are out, and it goes back dry and unoiled. Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW F 800 GS built from 2007 to 2018, and for that machine only. The F 800 GS sold from 2023 onward is a different motorcycle with a different airbox, and it takes a different Sprint Filter part number — not this one. Inside its own list, PM35S covers ten machines from two makes — the F 700 GS, the F 800 R, the GT and a Husqvarna among them — all shown with their years in the Fitment tab.
