DescriptionThe whole story▼
Five point three kilograms off a heritage boxer. BMW's standard header assembly on the R 12 weighs 8.3 kg — a substantial steel construction with the catalytic converter built in — and this titanium replacement weighs 2.99.
Key Features
- 2.99 kg against the standard 8.3 kg: 5.3 kg and 64 per cent less
- 4.1 PS more at 7,500 rpm, peak output rising from 102.8 to 109.4 PS
- 2.1 Nm more at 6,700 rpm
- Made from the finest titanium
- Turns an Akrapovic slip-on into a full system
- Also fits the Akrapovic silencer BMW supplies as an accessory
- No road approval — circuit use only
Weight Where a Retro Bike Carries Too Much
The R 12 and R 12 nineT are built to look right first. That means a lot of visible metal and a chassis that is not especially light — 220 kg for the nineT — with the header assembly slung low between the cylinders.
Removing 5.3 kg from that position lowers the centre of gravity as well as the total, which on a bike ridden slowly through towns and parked by hand is felt more than the power figure.
About the Check Engine Light
Akrapovic recommends remapping the ECU after fitting, specifically to prevent the check engine warning and to get optimised performance and throttle response. On Euro 5+ machines with two lambda sensors the light will otherwise come on, because the sensors no longer see a catalytic converter where the ECU expects one.
That is not a fault and it is not a reason to avoid the part. It is a cost to plan for alongside it.
What You Need Alongside It
This header does not work on its own. It requires an Akrapovic slip-on — for these motorcycles that is S-B12SO25-HISSSBL, the black-coated stainless double conical set. It also fits the Akrapovic silencer BMW offers through its own accessory range.
Sixty Minutes, Because It Is a Boxer
Sixty minutes is short for a header, and the reason is the engine layout. A boxer's cylinders point sideways, so the exhaust flanges sit in the open air rather than buried under a fairing and a radiator. Nothing major has to come off before the work starts.
Compare that with the 180 minutes Akrapovic quotes for the S 1000 header, where the cooling system is in the way. The same category of part, three times the labour, purely because of where the engine puts its ports.
What You Give Up
Removing the catalytic converter is what delivers the 4.1 PS and the 5.3 kg, and it is also what ends the type approval. There is no version of this part that does one without the other.
Fitment and Compatibility
E-B12E6 covers the BMW R 12 and R 12 nineT from model year 2024 through 2026. Installation is quoted at 60 minutes — short for a header, because a boxer leaves the exhaust flanges accessible from the side.
Road Approval
None. This product does not meet emission compliance requirements for street or highway use.
