DescriptionThe whole story▼
Most Akrapovic heat shields exist to finish off an Akrapovic exhaust. This one is different: it fits the standard Indian headers as well. That makes it the only part in this section anybody can buy for a completely unmodified motorcycle and have it work.
Key Features
- Fits Akrapovic headers and Indian's own alike
- 50 grams against the standard shield's 130
- Carbon fibre, replacing the factory part directly
- Ten minutes to fit
- Covers the FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S for 2019 and 2020
The Part That Does Not Need a System
Akrapovic states it plainly: this shield can be used on Akrapovic or stock headers. Nearly every other accessory in the range assumes an Akrapovic exhaust is already fitted, and this one does not.
For an FTR owner who likes the standard exhaust and simply wants the carbon look on the header, that makes it a genuinely standalone purchase.
Eighty Grams
130 g standard down to 50, which is a 62 per cent saving on a part that weighs less than a mobile phone. Nobody will feel it and nobody should pretend otherwise.
The reason to fit it is what it looks like on an FTR. Indian styled the bike around a flat-track racer, and the header shield sits high on the right where it is impossible to miss.
Ten Minutes
The quickest fitting time of anything Akrapovic lists. The shield unbolts from the header and the new one goes back on the same mounts. No tools beyond a set of allen keys and no adjustment.
Carbon on a Header, Not a Silencer
This shield sits on the header rather than on the muffler, which is a hotter place to put composite material. The resin systems Akrapovic uses for header shields are chosen for that, and it is why a header shield costs more than a silencer shield of similar size.
What It Is Protecting
On the FTR the header runs up the right side of the engine and past the rider's shin. The standard shield is there because without it a boot resting in the natural position would be against hot steel.
A carbon replacement has to do that job as well as the metal one did, which is why this is a structural composite part rather than a cosmetic cover clipped over the original.
Two Model Years
The FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S for 2019 and 2020. Indian revised the machine for 2021 with different bodywork and exhaust routing, and later bikes need a different part.
The Weave Is Visible Here
On a shield mounted this high and this far outboard, the carbon is a styling element whether the buyer wants it to be or not. Akrapovic lays the cloth so the pattern runs along the header rather than across it, which is a decision somebody made rather than an accident of the moulding.
What It Pairs With
If the motorcycle already wears the Akrapovic optional header or link pipe for the FTR, this shield completes the visual set. If not, it works on its own — which is the whole point of the sentence at the top of this page.
Road Approval
Not applicable. A heat shield is neither an emissions nor a noise part, and none of the approval rules attach to it.
