A used V-Strom 1000 is one of the standard starting points for a home-built overland bike. It is cheap for what it can do, the big V-twin is unstressed, and once it carries a rack, a sump guard and a set of soft luggage it is being asked to do something Suzuki never specified it for. Almost all of that conversion bolts to the outside. The Sprint Filter T12 changes one thing on the inside: a dry polyester special non-woven filtering to 7 microns, drawn up for off-road use, dust and desert conditions, sitting where the factory put an element chosen for a road-going tourer.
Key Features
- Filtration down to 7 microns — the finest medium in the Sprint Filter range
- Rated airflow 560 l/m²/sec, specified for extreme conditions, off-road riding and desert dust
- Dry non-woven with no oil in it, so nothing can travel downstream to the sensors
- Takes the standard element's place in an unmodified airbox; the map is left alone
- Regenerated with an air line and used again instead of bought again
- Covered by a warranty that runs two years from the purchase date
A brief the owner rewrote
Suzuki sold this generation as a road machine with gravel-road manners, and the airbox and its element were specified for exactly that. Riders then take a well-used example, strip the intent out of it and point it at Morocco or the Balkans, and nothing in the parts catalogue notices. The filter is the one place in the intake tract where a change of use can actually be answered, because it is the one consumable in it. Fitting the PM253T12 brings a single line of the specification into line with what the motorcycle is now doing — no modification, since it drops into the series housing, just a different medium in the same place.
What seven microns costs
The finer the medium, the more it holds and the less it passes. That relationship runs the length of the range: the P08 weave filters at 80 microns and flows a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec, the water-repellent P037 at 37 microns and 4,500, the P14 non-woven at 14 microns and 1,800, and this T12 at 7 microns and 560. On a litre-class twin that is a large share of flow to hand over deliberately, and only worth doing if the air you ride through earns it. If your 1000 lives on sealed roads with a gravel track at the end, the P08 is the right part and this is not.
Care and cleaning
Routine service is an air line held to the clean face, so the dust leaves by the side it came in. When the element has had a hard trip, wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and keep rinsing until the run-off is clear. Leave it in open air until it is completely dry — never near heat, never over a flame — and refit it dry. Nothing about a T12 is ever oiled. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 of 2014 to 2019; it goes into the unmodified series airbox in place of the original element. Four machines share this element: the V-Strom 1000 and V-Strom 1000XT of that generation, and the V-Strom 1050 and 1050XT from 2020. The full list is in the Fitment tab.
