One real inconvenience comes with a washable depth medium, and it is not the washing. It is the drying. A mat that has been through water has to be dry the whole way through before it goes anywhere near the airbox, no heat may be used to hurry that along, and on a machine ridden through the year it can quietly cost a day or two off the road. The remedy is already in the garage, and it is free: keep the original panel when this element goes in, and it becomes the stand-in.
Key Features
- Extreme-conditions medium in dry polyester nonwoven: 7 microns, 560 l/m²/sec
- Roughly a ninth of the standard weave's rate, surrendered for far finer retention
- Cleaned dry with compressed air in most cases, which sidesteps drying altogether
- No oil in its life, so nothing is applied and nothing has to cure before refitting
- Direct fit for the 890 airbox in all three listed forms; nothing cut, no remapping
- Two years of warranty, on an element specified to last as long as the motorcycle
Plan around the drying, not the washing
Dry servicing is the ordinary case and takes minutes, so most of the year the question never arises. It arises after a wet crossing, or when a heavy load has gone past what an air line will lift, and that is exactly when the bike is likely to be wanted again soon. Owners who keep the factory panel bagged on a shelf never meet the problem: the panel goes in for a day, the mat dries at its own pace, and the two swap back at leisure. It costs nothing.
What the medium is drawn for
The T12 stops particles down to 7 microns and passes 560 litres per square metre per second, where the standard cloth works at 80 microns and 5,050. That is about a ninth of the rate, and no other Sprint Filter medium gives up as much. Such a trade earns its keep in genuinely loaded air — unsealed days, dust raised by the wheels ahead — and not on a road-ridden naked, where the standard weave is the honest recommendation. It is not an output part either. No element in an unmodified airbox makes a standard machine quicker, and on the restricted L the limit is a licence class. The real gain is an intake restriction that starts low and is recovered by cleaning.
Care and cleaning
Nine services out of ten are an air line and a few minutes: hold it to the clean side of the PM175T12 and work across the medium until it stops giving anything up. The wet route is the exception — hand-warm water, a small amount of mild detergent, rinsed until the water leaves clear. Afterwards give it open air and time, keep it away from radiators, hot-air guns and any flame, and refit it only when no dampness remains anywhere in the mat. Sprint Filter's care sheet is filed under Downloads.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the KTM 890 Duke, Duke L and Duke R across model years 2020 to 2026, replacing the original panel in the series airbox. Four machines share this element in total, spanning three engine sizes, because the housing is common to them. The Fitment tab lists all four with their years — and the year is part of the identification, not a detail.
