A cruiser breathes differently from the sports machines that share its engine family. The CMX500 Rebel is geared and ridden for the lower half of its rev range, at road speeds that rarely ask the twin for everything it has, and the intake reflects that: airflow through the box is gentle and unhurried for most of the time the engine is running. Pleasant to ride, slightly awkward for the filter — slow-moving air carries dust into an airbox readily and carries almost none of it back out. Whatever arrives tends to stay. An element that can be lifted out and cleaned answers that better than one designed to be thrown away.
Key Features
- Single-layer polyester weave that filters dry — no oil is applied to it, ever
- 80 microns of filtration paired with a rated 5,050 litres per square metre per second of flow
- Threads of 22 microns diameter and above; that number is the fibre, not the mesh it forms
- Close to double the filtering area of comparable performance elements, inside the standard housing
- Goes into the series airbox where the paper element sat; airbox and fuelling stay as they are
- Built to last the life of the motorcycle, with two years of cover from the date it is bought
A quiet airbox keeps what it collects
Relaxed riding does not mean clean air. The Rebel picks up the same road dust, brake and tyre particles and summer pollen as anything else on that stretch of tarmac, and it does so at a pace that gives all of it time to settle. The consequence is easy to miss: the intake gives no warning as it loads, because an injected twin simply trims around a slowly rising restriction until the change has grown large. The dry element answers that with access rather than replacement. It comes out, it is blown through, it goes back — the same hardware at the same starting point, service after service, instead of a run of new cartridges each beginning its own slow decline.
Choosing the weave for the road you ride
Sprint Filter builds several media, and they are a trade rather than a ranking: the finer the fabric, the more it holds back and the less it flows. The P037 sits at 37 microns and 4,500 litres, the P14 at 14 microns and 1,800, the T12 at 7 microns and 560 for desert and off-road work. The P08 in the PM241S occupies the road-and-track end of that scale, which for a paved-road cruiser is the honest place to be. Going finer would buy retention this machine has little use for and pay for it in flow every hour the engine turns.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean face, directed so the dirt leaves outward, handles routine servicing. Warm water and a little mild detergent deal with what the air will not shift; rinse well. Drying is done in air alone — no heat source of any kind near it — and the element goes back in dry. The maintenance sheet for this part is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Honda CMX500 Rebel, model years 2017 to 2026. Two machines are covered by this element in total; the smaller CMX300 Rebel of the same years is the second. The full list is in the Fitment tab.
