DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01092-24 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- 82 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Measured spring rate 80 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 01092-24
- Powder-coated yellow
- Free length 170 mm
- Inner diameter 57 mm
Why the Rate Holds
Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.
Size and Rate
The 57 mm bore and 170 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 80 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
What This Rate Does
Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.
What Fitting Involves
Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
