Shaped for the Family
The P profile is drawn around the Panigale cockpit rather than around Ducati's range generally. On a bike with this little room behind the fairing, that specificity is worth having.
A Hundred and Forty-Eight Horsepower
From 898 cc, which is a great deal for a middleweight twin. The 899 was quick enough to embarrass supersport fours and considerably easier to ride than its larger sibling.
Twin-Sided, and Better For It
The conventional swingarm was a cost decision and it also saved weight and improved the geometry slightly. Ducati never advertised that second part and riders noticed anyway.
Throttle Assembly Only
The switch block is untouched. This is the housing by itself, for owners whose switchgear works and who object to the moulded plastic on a motorcycle of this quality.
The Bore the Tube Runs In
Machined rather than moulded, which keeps the grip's rotation smooth long after an injection-moulded body has begun to move against it.
Black Anodised
Converted into the surface. It sits quietly on a motorcycle whose bodywork is already doing all the visual work.
Ergal 7075
An aerospace grade at roughly double the yield strength of ordinary machined aluminium. On a clamped component, the material determines whether it stays put over years.
The Frameless Middleweight
Ducati carried the monocoque architecture down to the 899 rather than reverting to a trellis for the cheaper bike. Nothing else in the class was built that way and nothing has been since.
Short-Lived
Only two model years before the 959 replaced it. That scarcity has kept the 899 more sought-after than a middleweight superbike of its age would normally be.
