The Air-Cooled Thruxton
Eight hundred and sixty-five cubic centimetres, clip-ons and a seat hump, built when Triumph's modern classics still had carburettor-era architecture.
Sixty-Nine Horsepower
Which was never the point. The 900 Thruxton was bought for how it looked and how it sounded, and a great many were then modified further.
Charcoal in a Plastic Vessel
It absorbs petrol vapour rising from a warm tank and holds it until the engine can draw it through the intake. That is the whole mechanism.
Nothing Structural
The bracket carries the vessel and nothing else. Removing it affects no part of the frame, the subframe or anything that holds the motorcycle together.
Cold Weather Starting
A soaked bed is worst in winter, when the engine is least willing and the extra fuel reaching the intake is least welcome.
Cold Weather Makes It Worse
Condensation collects in vapour lines running from a warm tank to a cold vessel, and in a hard frost that water can block the smallest bend. It is an intermittent fault with a seasonal pattern.
A Long Way From a Workshop
A saturated canister produces hard starting in exactly the places where a dealer is a day's ride away. That is the practical argument on any motorcycle used for genuine distance.
Nothing About Performance
No power, no throttle response, no consumption benefit and no change to how the motorcycle rides. The gains are space, access and one fewer thing to fail, which is a modest and honest list.
Older Bikes First
The case for removal strengthens with age, because the bed degrades whether the motorcycle is ridden or not.
