DescriptionThe whole story▼
The XT1200Z Super Ténéré is tall and heavy, and like every big adventure bike it is most vulnerable at walking pace. A stall in a rutted car park, on a sloping campsite or in a gravel turning area rarely hurts the rider, but it often ends with the bike on its side. The clutch is what prevents it. For the Super Ténéré from 2012 to 2020, Accossato lists the ESC777, a machined aluminium clutch lever whose adjustable span keeps the friction zone under your most sensitive fingers.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré, 2012 to 2020
- Replaces the stock lever at the original clutch mounting
- Adjustable span to the grip
- Long blade for a lighter pull in gold, orange, blue and green
- Short blade for two-finger control in five colours
- Anodised aluminium, CNC-machined, black hub
- Fixed blade, no folding joint
Construction and Material Quality
Anodising is an electrochemical process: the machined aluminium part is placed in an acid bath, and an electric current grows a hard oxide layer out of its surface, which is then dyed and sealed. Accossato finishes the ESC777 this way after cutting it from aluminium on CNC machines. The hub comes out black, the blade in the colour you order, and neither finish can chip off like paint. The lever is fixed in one piece from the pivot to the tip, so when you hold the clutch half-engaged at walking pace, the blade barely flexes under your fingers.
Stalling at Walking Pace
Most slow-speed stalls have the same cause: the rider lets the clutch out a little too far while the throttle is closed, the revs drop and the engine dies. On a tall bike with the steering turned, the next second decides whether you catch it or not. The defence is to keep the clutch slipping and the revs slightly up, and to let the rear brake, not the engine, control the speed. That calls for a lever the fingers can hold in the friction zone for a long time with little effort. Set the ESC777 so that the take-up begins with your fingers already curled, and consider the long blade, whose extra leverage makes the pull lighter. On the Super Ténéré, practise tight turns and very slow riding in an empty car park with the luggage fitted, because a loaded bike behaves differently from an empty one.
Fitment and Compatibility
The ESC777 is listed by Accossato for the XT 1200 from 2012 to 2020 and replaces the stock lever at the original clutch mounting of the Super Ténéré. A second Accossato clutch lever, the ESY688, is given for 2017 to 2019, so for those years it is worth comparing your original lever with the product photos. Bikes from 2010 and 2011 are not included in this entry. The front brake lever, the EDF016, covers the XT1200Z from 2010 to 2020.
Road Approval
For the ESC777 there is no documented German ABE. It is sold for use on the track.
