The airbox of the SVT-650 X accepts two media that could scarcely be further apart. At one end the T12 passes a rated 560 l/m²/sec through a 7-micron nonwoven. At the other, the racing panel on this page passes 15,000 through an 85-micron weave — close to twenty-seven times the throughput, in the same frame, with the same fitting, the same cleaning routine and the same two-year warranty. What sits at this end of the range

Its aperture is the widest of the media offered for this housing, which is the direct consequence of that flow figure rather than an oversight — retention and throughput are the two ends of a single seesaw and no material escapes it. The measured retention figure is published alongside it, 95.22 % on 100-micron particles against 93.13 % for the standard weave, and it is a result from one test band rather than a general ranking. Below that band the finer media in this housing still stop what this one passes.

Choosing an end rather than a rank

The useful question is not which of the two extremes is better but which describes the air the bike meets. Circuit sessions and a maintenance routine that includes the intake point one way; dust, sand and unsurfaced roads point the other; and a great deal of ordinary riding points at neither, which is why a standard panel exists between them. Whatever is chosen, the boundary stays where it is: no slot-in element makes an unmodified SVT-650 X noticeably stronger. The gain on offer is a low intake resistance that is restored at every wash, not output.

Care and cleaning

Hold a compressed-air line to the clean face and work outwards, so that whatever the weave stopped leaves by the route it arrived on. Films that air cannot lift come away under hand-warm water with a little mild detergent, rinsed until the water is clear. Dry in ambient air and keep heat entirely out of the process — no gun, no radiator, no flame — then refit the SM286S F1-85 dry, with nothing applied to it.
