The Bike Nobody Expected
A power cruiser with a 240 section rear tyre, 162 horsepower and a chassis that genuinely turns. Almost nothing about the idea should have worked and Ducati sold it for eight years.
The Testastretta 11 DS
The 1198 cc engine with dual spark plugs per cylinder and reduced valve overlap. It made a superbike motor tractable at the revs a cruiser actually uses without gelding it.
Long Days, Many Junctions
A Diavel covers distance rather than laps, which means the indicator switch is worked constantly and the modes are changed on the move. This side of the bar does most of that.
Three Finishes
Black, red and titanium. The Diavel carries a great deal of exposed machined aluminium already and all three sit naturally among it rather than against it.
Wrists Rolled Forward
The riding position puts the hands well out and changes the angle at which a thumb meets a switch. Controls have to be findable in that posture too, which is a different problem from a tucked one.
Sealed Contacts
Enclosed inside the machined body. A decade of weather rather than a season of pressure washing is what this bike's switchgear actually has to survive.
Eight Model Years
Ducati sold the original Diavel from 2011 to 2019 with remarkably little changed. That is a long run for a motorcycle everybody expected to fail within two.
Ducati's Own Plug
Pre-wired to the factory connector, so nothing is spliced. Fifteen minutes with a hex key and the job is finished.
A Chassis Doing Unlikely Work
Making a 240 section tyre turn required a specific rear geometry and a great deal of development. It is the least visible and most impressive engineering on the whole motorcycle.
