Voge catalogued the Trofeo 300AC for two model years, 2020 and 2021, so almost every one still running has at least one change of owner ahead of it. That casts an unusual light on a filter built to last as long as the motorcycle. Nearly everything else fitted to a bike is either used up before it is sold or unbolted before the photographs are taken. SM257P14 is neither. It stays where it was put, it is not consumed, and it goes across with the keys.

A part that transfers with the machine

Be honest about the scale of it: a clean element adds nothing to what a used 300 fetches, and nobody asks about the airbox before the money changes hands. The value sits on the far side of the sale. Whoever takes the bike on inherits a maintenance list with one recurring entry missing from it, because this panel is cleaned and refitted rather than reordered — and for a model whose production window closed in 2021, an item that never has to be ordered again is worth more than it looks. It also hands over in a state somebody can vouch for: you can put it back clean on the morning the bike leaves.

The trade the finer medium asks for

Sprint Filter's road weave holds at 80 microns with a rating of 5,050 litres per square metre per second. This nonwoven holds at 14 and carries 1,800. Retention and flow move in opposite directions every time, which makes the choice a matter of conditions rather than of rank. And the limit is worth stating without decoration: no panel inside a standard airbox gives a 300 single a power figure it did not have. What it does give is an intake resistance that starts low and is put back to low at every service, plus a part regenerated with an air line rather than bought over and over.

Care and cleaning

Everything SM257P14 needs is compressed air, applied from the clean face outward so the dirt travels back out the way it arrived rather than further into the material. Where air leaves a residue, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will shift it; rinse until the water runs clear. It then dries in moving air at ordinary room temperature and nowhere near a heat source, because a radiator, a hot air gun or a flame will finish it in seconds.
