Ride-by-wire throttle bodies, riding modes and a fuelling map that is calculated from what the intake sensors report — all of it downstream of the air filter, all of it depending on the air arriving clean and on the readings being honest. That is the argument against oiled filters on this motorcycle, and it is a practical one rather than a matter of taste. The Sprint Filter PM217S is dry woven polyester: it has never been oiled, so there is no film that can be drawn along the tract onto a sensor element.

Key Features

A dry medium holds nothing that could migrate onto the air sensor or the throttle bodies

Its filtering area comes to roughly double that of other performance filters

Polyester threads of ø 22 microns, woven to a calibrated 80 µm aperture and rated 5,050 l/m²/sec

A direct replacement in the standard airbox: fuelling, mapping and homologation all left untouched

Compressed air is the normal service; the element is washable and reusable

The warranty is two years, from the date of purchase

A sensor reads what reaches it

An over-oiled cotton filter loses some of its oil to the airstream, and the place that oil settles is the hot element that measures the air. A contaminated sensor does not fail outright; it reports slightly wrong, and the map is calculated from slightly wrong. The symptom is a bike that runs marginally differently and nothing to point at. A dry medium removes the whole failure mode: there is no oil in the system at any stage, before or after cleaning, and nothing about servicing the filter can change what the electronics are told.

Nothing changes except the element

The PM217S goes into the standard airbox in the standard position, the cover closes on it unmodified and the engine is fuelled exactly as Triumph intended. There is no remap, no declaration and no visible difference — which on a motorcycle bought for how it looks is part of the specification.

Care and cleaning

A bike ridden in the dry asks for nothing more than compressed air, from the clean side outwards, which returns the element to the restriction it started with. When more is needed, a wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent does it, with the rinsing kept up until the water runs clear. Drying belongs in open air and nowhere near heat or a flame, and the element goes back in dry — no oil to reapply, because none was ever there. The same PM217S element covers five machines built around this airbox — the Speed Twin 900 and Speed Twin 1200, and the Thruxton 1200 in R, RS and TFC form.
