The Brutale 800 is the MV people actually ride to work, which sounds like faint praise and is not. A road bike loads its air filter in the least dramatic way possible — slowly, evenly, with the fine particulate that traffic produces — and that is precisely the pattern that lets a paper element go unnoticed for far too long. There is no dusty day to prompt an inspection and no warning on the dash. The Sprint Filter P08 CM135S is a dry polyester element that can be washed back to its starting restriction rather than drifting quietly away from it.

The failure that never announces itself

Air filters do not break. They load, and the engine management compensates by metering fuel to whatever air arrives. Consumption creeps up by an amount too small to notice week to week, the throttle gets a little lazier, and the rider adjusts without ever registering that anything changed. On a bike as sharply set up as a Brutale that gradual softening is the last thing you want, because sharpness is the entire product.

The Brutale 800 has been in production since 2013 in a steady series of revisions, and the airbox has carried through all of them. Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit dry; there is no oiling step.
